The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not only his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
