The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a military coup in last fall and given more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.
This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the potential of his transfer to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a history of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.
The legal document emphasizes that the United States embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative United States President Donald Trump, causing him to impose a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will have a detention review on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other health problems.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over the former president's case.
The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was took office without problem on the first day of 2023.
But a week later, on January 8th, many his followers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, Brasília.
The police stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
The justices found that the rioters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.
At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also banned from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The one-time head of state called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
